Jose Alves Cunha Caldas da Rainha pottery nodding MONK figurine. I believe this was made in the early 1900's in Portugal. It is unique in that it is "articulated" in two places...his head nods as well as a nodder joint inside his robe at the location of his hips. this rare piece does have some flaws, but I think still displays quite nicely. It will look even better when it is given a proper cleaning. Made from red clayI think there may be damage on his head under his left ear; not sure if he was made this way or not. There is also some paint missing in areas, and some chips here and there. Most of the chips are small, some may appear as chips but are actually just areas where the paint is flaked off. Bottom is stamped "Jose A. Cunha...then what looks like C. Loas and below that what looks to me like successor". Measures approx 11" tall. Jose made several styles of nodders and they are very hard to find. I will be sure to pack it carefully, however, his head may still need some adjusting after shipment to get him to nod as designed.
